Claire looked out towards the school’s main building; she couldn’t quite bring herself to go in and actually ‘learn’ something that she will ultimately forget through the years, heck she’d forget it all when the bell rings. Education was needed for careers, and Claire didn’t see herself as a career woman, she wanted to stay in this town and work in her family’s engineering business. That way she could watch over her father and brother, sometimes it’s handy to have a woman around even if you could barely say she acted like one.
It was art she was missing now and thankful for it, Claire had learned to appreciate art when other’s do it but never her own. There were far too many art freaks in this school and some were the closest to her. She appreciated their art only because Claire knew how they felt through their drawings, it was an unspoken connection.
Leaning against the brick bike shed that had been empty for god knows how long. No one ever cycled to school anymore in fear that it might get stolen, but thinking it over Claire never really recalled anyone having a good enough bike for anyone to think or try to steal it. If bikes weren’t stolen they were almost always vandalized through puncturing their tires to robbing the lights and bells. Useless junk .
Claire had been observing her surroundings; she wore a short black skirt, not to tight and not to puffy, a white slightly creased blouse teamed with a long black tire and a sleeveless grey cardigan. As usual on her feet was her biker boots that she would never leave the house without. They had a sick way of increasing the pain if you kicked someone.. In Claire’s left hand was a lit cigarette, halfway through, the ember on the end had already started to die out.
Bringing it and placing it between her rolled up her lips, taking it in as it drained down into her lungs. A soft burn tickling the back of her throat, again she moved the cigarette away from her mouth, blowing out the light grey smoke. Claire had been smoking for a good few years now, it was a stress reliever. With everything at work, having to take care of her brothers, her constant fear of the dark and not to mention having to keep Aubrey in line took its toll on a person. Oh and you can’t forget the nagging from unauthorized absences at school.
Kicking a stone lightly in some means of entertainment, watching it roll a few feet and then lay still, it says a lot when a person will miss a lesson just to watch a stone be kicked. Claire sighed, her free hand brushed back through her dark hair, shaking it lightly in the process.
“I need a drink.” Claire took one last toke from her cigarette before stubbing it out of the floor, making sure that the ember at the end was completely destroyed. Now the burnout would have to find another means of entertainment before deciding to go to lesson, and she was willing to try anything before that.
Shuffling her hand into her pocket Claire brought out her small mp3 player, she didn’t have enough money for the ‘iPod’ everyone else seemed to have and her mp3 worked just as good, well maybe. Plugging the headphones into her ears and turning it up to full volume, the beat of the song started quiet for the first starting seconds but was soon introduced with the singer’s soft but hollow voice.
“You better crawl on your knees, the next time you say that you love me.” Claire sang the first line, her eyes closed as she zoned out into its tune.
